Michael Wolgemut was important in making German woodcut extra sophisticated from about 1475, and Erhard Reuwich was the primary to use cross-hatching . Both of these produced primarily book-illustrations, as did numerous Italian artists who were also raising requirements there on the same interval. At the top of the century Albrecht Dürer introduced the Western woodcut to a degree that has never been surpassed, and tremendously elevated the standing of the single-leaf (i.e. an image sold separately) woodcut.
